Start with the part that is not working.
These checks cover the current private Mac build.
Fn does not start dictation
Grant Microphone, Accessibility, and Input Monitoring in System Settings, then quit and reopen Simply Speak. macOS only hands an app the keyboard when it starts, so a permission granted while the app is running does nothing until the next launch.
Simply Speak says this itself whenever the shortcut cannot run: the menu bar icon turns to a warning, and the message names what is missing.
Also check whether macOS has assigned Globe/Fn to another system action.
Text is not inserted
Keep the same editor focused from shortcut press through insertion. If focus changes, Simply Speak saves the result to History instead of typing into the new target.
Secure fields and unverified opaque editors remain blocked by design.
The selected model falls back
Open Models and check the active provider status, credential state, quota, and connection. Fallback is temporary and should not change the saved model selection.
Polish takes too long
Compare Clean with Refine or Ultra — Clean runs on your Mac with no AI call, so it isolates whether the delay is the editor. The Insights view separates speech, cleanup, validation, and insertion time so the slow stage is visible.
Your text was not lost
When insertion fails or focus changes, check History. Recoverable text should be stored there with an “Insert here” or copy action.
